Convergence

Convergence, 2016 Hot sculpted glass, steel, wire, 3D printed plastic, LEDs, weather sensor The sculpture is approximately 45’ in width, divided over two parts of the space. The right side view is 20’ long, 17’ wide, and 14’ tall. The left side is 10’ long, 10’ long, and 14’ tall (from ceiling). Uber Advanced Technology Building, Pittsburgh, PA Convergence draws from the building’s environment and the advanced digital & technology development within. The optical glass elements light up in real time, mapping the wind, temperature, humidity, and dew point. Informed by both the surroundings of tangled vines and a major waterway, the sculpture flows from chaos to an ordered eddy of lines. As a permanent feature of the building, this work stimulates dialogue and offers a perspective of data organization as a mode of sustainability to understand our changing environment. Each of the 700 pieces of hand made glass glass curves features an individually controlled LED on a custom circuit board assembly. A site mounted weather station activates the LED display with a custom JAVA application. An internet connection provides system monitoring and offers redundancy for weather data.
