Drone Prix, 2018
Steel, Paint, LEDs
24' high x 150' wide x 60' deep
Light City Baltimore, Rash Field
In Collaboration with Global Air Media, Commissioned by Baltimore Office of Promotion & the Arts
Both looming and frail, the illuminated dock crane stanchions of the Drone Prix provide a view into an anthropomorphic view of global trade through the VR headsets of pilots operating race drones at up to 60 miles per hour.
The illuminated race course was created for the second Baltimore Drone Grand Prix. The cranes provided the expert pilots a complex flight path informed by the Baltimore Harbor. The results resemble the flattened, simplified spaces of early computer games. The drone’s machine vision of the Prix recreated scenes informed by the 1994 minimalist tank shooter Spectre VR.
