Site and Scope is an extended pixel map, made of cut and hand polished clear borosilicate glass rods and CNC cut mirrored glass panels that reflect a complex topographical relief. The sculpture is informed by the geographic positioning of BGSU in the area historically known as the Great Black Swamp, which was drained for agricultural purposes. The gentle ridges of the regional topography towards Lake Erie is the foundation for our parametric modeling, driving the height mapping of the sculpture.
The overall shape is an abstracted Gantt chart. The dynamic light moving throughout the glass shows the water quality of the region, using data from the Portage River.. Both the rod and cut forms have custom wall mounts and fittings created with the aid of 3D printing, CNC machining, and traditional metalworking processes.
